Definition
There are many causes for lumps in the breast. These range from normal changes in your body to abnormal breast disease. Breast lumps are either benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous).

A mammogram is an x-ray picture of the breasts. It is used to find tumors and to help tell the difference between noncancerous (benign) and cancerous (malignant) disease.

There are a lot of lumps in the breasts that are not cancerous, so just because you find a lump it does not necessarily mean that you have breast cancer.

Plugged ducts manifest as mildly tender lumps in the breasts of lactating women who have no other systemic signs of illness. The lumps appear in different places and are not tender. Continued breastfeeding ensures adequate emptying of the breast.

The vast majority of breast lumps are not caused by breast cancer. However, breast cancers are a cause of lumps in the breasts. There are separate leaflets called 'Cancer of the Breast' and 'Cancer of the Breast - Hereditary Factors'.
