Mediastinitis is inflammation of the tissues in the mid-chest, or mediastinum. It can be either acute or chronic.

Mediastinitis may occur suddenly (acute) or may develop slowly and get worse over time (chronic). Most cases occur in patients who have had open chest surgery. Less than 5 percent of patients develop mediastinitis after having chest surgery.

Mediastinitis may be associated with empyema and subphrenic abscess.
Clinically, patients present with chills, high fever, tachycardia and chest pain. The mortality rate for acute mediastinitis is high.
