Myelomeningocele is the most common type of spina bifida. It is a neural tube defect in which the bones of the spine do not completely form, resulting in an incomplete spinal canal.

Meningocele
In this case the membranes poke through an open part of the spine. This forms a cyst. Spinal fluid can leak out. This type can be treated.

Meningocele is the least common of the three forms. The rear part of the spinal column has a larger opening. The protective membrane around the cord sticks out through the spinal column. The spinal cord and nerves usually remain in place.

Meningocele. In this rare form of spina bifida, the protective membranes around the spinal cord (meninges) push out through the opening in the vertebrae.

Myelomeningocele
Myelomeningocele is the most serious type of spina bifida. It is estimated that it affects one baby in every 1,000 that are born in Britain.

Myelomeningocele, the fourth form, is the most severe and occurs when the spinal cord is exposed through the opening in the spine, resulting in partial or complete paralysis of the parts of the body below the spinal opening.

Meningoceles and myelomeningoceles may appear as saclike structures on an infant's back at birth. When most people refer to spina bifida, they are referring to the most severe form, myelomeningocele, which occurs in about one in 1,000 births.

Meningocele: The membrane that surrounds the spinal cord may enlarge, creating a lump or “cyst.' This is often invisible through the skin and causes no problems.

Meningocele - the sac contains tissues that cover the spinal cord (meninges) and cerebrospinal fluid. Nerve damage is minimal, so there's often little disability.

Meningocele is the least common form of Spina Bifida. The outer part of some of the vertebrae are split and the meninges are usually damaged and pushed out through an opening. The nerves are not badly damaged and hence there is little disability.

Spina bifida meningocele: This type, along with myelomeningocele, is collectively known as spina bifida manifesta. Meningocele accounts for 4% of all spina bifida manifesta cases.

Includes myelomeningocele (involving both spinal cord and meninges) and meningocele (involving just the meninges). Stenosis A narrowing or constriction of the diameter of a bodily passage or orifice.
