These techniques are now being used to detect minimal residual disease (MRD) following remission. There are times when measurements of MRD, in blood or bone marrow samples, will be used to determine your child's risk level and treatment.

When treatment is complete, tests for minimal residual disease can be performed. These new tests detect the presence of lingering leukemic cells that would have been missed by standard testing.

As part of our clinical trials, we identified that minimal residual disease levels (measuring leukemia cells that cannot be seen under a microscope using a special test) can predict risk of relapse and be used to determine treatment.
