Miscarriage explained
Spontaneous miscarriage is defined as the loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks gestation. Most spontaneous miscarriages (75 to 80 per cent) occur in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

About miscarriage
Miscarriage is very common, and occurs in three out of every 10 pregnancies. Most miscarriages happen in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

How is miscarriage diagnosed?
The most common signs of miscarriage are vaginal spotting or bleeding, passing of tissue, and cramping. Ultrasound is usually used to diagnose miscarriage.

After a miscarriage, are you at risk for miscarrying again?
Miscarriage is usually a chance event, not a sign of an ongoing problem. If you have had one miscarriage, your chances for future successful pregnancies are good.

MISCARRIAGE RATES
Miscarriage in early pregnancy is common. Studies show that about 8 to 20 percent of women who know they are pregnant have a miscarriage some time before 20 weeks of pregnancy; 80 percent of these occur in the first 12 weeks [1].
