Mitral regurgitation

Disease Mitral incompetenceMitral stenosis

Mitral Regurgitation
Mitral regurgitation is where blood leaks back through the mitral valve in the heart as the valve does not close properly. This increases the pressure in the left atrium and in the blood vessels coming from the lungs.

Acute mitral regurgitation
Acute MR is characterized by an increase in preload and a decrease in afterload causing an increase in end-diastolic volume (EDV) and a decrease in end-systolic volume (ESV).

Mitral regurgitation becomes chronic when the condition persists rather than occurring for only a short time period. Chronic mitral regurgitation should be distinguished from acute mitral regurgitation.

MITRAL REGURGITATION OVERVIEW
Mitral regurgitation (MR), which is also known as mitral insufficiency, is a common heart valve disorder. When mitral regurgitation is present, blood flows backwards through the mitral valve when the heart contracts.

Acute mitral regurgitation is a disorder in which the heart's mitral valve suddenly does not close properly, causing blood to flow backward (leak) into the upper heart chamber when the left lower heart chamber contracts.

Severe mitral regurgitation - of any cause - can weaken your heart. When the left ventricle contracts in a heart with mitral regurgitation, some blood flows backward into the left atrium instead of flowing forward into the aorta.

Chronic mitral regurgitation occurs when the mitral valve in the heart fails to close tightly. This allows some oxygen-rich blood to flow back into the heart rather than out into the body.

Mitral regurgitation: This murmur is usually loudest at the apex and radiates to the axilla.
Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy: This murmur intensifies when patients do a Valsalva maneuver.

Mitral regurgitation is the leaking of blood from the left ventricle across the mitral valve, and into the left atrium. The flow of blood pumped by the heart is controlled by one-way valves. These valves assure that blood moves in only one direction.

Mitral regurgitation is a side effect of mitral valve prolapse where blood flows abnormally through the mitral valve. Infective endocarditis is an infection of the heart.

Mitral regurgitation is the most common type of heart valve insufficiency. After age 55, some degree of mitral regurgitation is found in almost 20% of men and women who have an echocardiogram.

Mitral regurgitation - the mitral valve separates the left atrium from the left ventricle. Mitral regurgitation means the mitral valve doesn't close properly, allowing blood to backtrack into the atrium.

Severe mitral regurgitation places an extra strain on the heart due to the need to pump extra blood. The left ventricle becomes enlarged and, if untreated, weakened. This can cause heart failure.

People with existing diseases of the heart valves (aortic stenosis, mitral stenosis, mitral regurgitation, etc.) and people who have undergone heart valve replacements are at an increased risk of developing endocarditis.

This leakage is called mitral regurgitation. It usually gets worse with time and is more common in men with mitral valve prolapse and in people with high blood pressure.
