Mono is caused by a virus called the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and is transferred through saliva. EBV causes lymphocytes--white blood cells that fight infections--to enlarge and increase in number.

 


The diagnosis of mono can be made with a simple blood test that many physicians perform in the office.

Mono is usually caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a very common virus that most kids are exposed to at some point while growing up. Infants and young kids infected with EBV usually have very mild symptoms or none at all.

Mono can be spread through contact with saliva, mucus from the nose and throat, and sometimes tears. Because the virus can be spread through kissing, it has earned the nickname the "kissing disease.

Mono may begin slowly with fatigue, a general ill feeling, headache, and sore throat. The sore throat slowly gets worse. Your tonsils become swollen and develop a whitish-yellow covering. The lymph nodes in the neck are frequently swollen and painful.

Infectious mono is spread through the exchange of saliva. That can occur when people share eating utensils or enjoy a passionate kiss (hence the name, "the kissing disease"). Viruses other than EBV can cause similar, mono-like illnesses.

Most people with mono have mild liver inflammation (hepatitis). Jaundice occurs occasionally, usually in people older than 35. About half of the people with mono have a low count of platelets, which are blood cells involved in clotting.

One of the commonest cause in teens of extreme tiredness is "Mono," or "the kissing disease." Some of the other signs of mononucleosis are fever, sore throat, headache, and swollen glands.

The only way to find out if you have Mono is to get a blood test called the "Mono spot." However, even if you do have Mono, there is nothing you can do except get plenty of rest and eat a healthy diet.

Mono usually occurs in people aged 15-25 years. Mono is highly contagious. Not surprisingly, 1-3% of college students contract mono each year. Infection spreads through exposure to body fluids containing the virus.

The vanguard of this advancing army is composed of a more or less compact layer of the mono-nuclear phagocytes (polyblasts) accompanied by numerous new vessels.

It is now known that polyunsaturated and mono-unsaturated fats provide health benefits such as helping to keep the heart healthy.

Some dietary fats, such as mono-unsaturated fats, are healthier than others, such as saturated fats or trans fats. Replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats helps lower blood cholesterol levels. Most unsaturated fats come from plant sources.

Carbohydrates are classified into mono, di, tri, poly and heterosaccharides. The smallest carbohydrates are monosaccharides such as glucose whereas polysaccharides such as starch, cellulose and glycogen can be large and even indeterminate in length.

Instead, eat more mono- and polyunsaturated fats, found in vegetable oils, and opt for low-fat dairy products and lean meat. The body does not need pure sugar from drinks or food, and you should aim to get your calories from more nutritious foods.

When cooking, the recommendation is to use olive oil as well as any mono-saturated oils like peanut and canola oil on a daily basis, and also consume dairy products that are low in fat, yogurt and cheese.

Doses should be adjusted based on clinical response. Use of buspirone at the same time as mono-amine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs, phenelzine, tranycypromine) may cause severe blood pressure elevations. Use of buspirone with MAOIs should be avoided.

However, there are probably several other factors involved. Mono is a very common disease, but Hodgkin lymphoma is very uncommon. For those cases not associated with EBV, other viruses may be involved.

Some viruses can cause specific types of sore throat. For example, Coxsackievirus sometimes causes blisters in the throat, especially in the late summer and early fall. Mono and the flu can also cause specific viral throat infections.
