Myeloma
Myeloma is a cancer that affects cells in the bone marrow called plasma cells. As the cancerous plasma cells fill the bone marrow, you are not able to make enough normal blood cells.

Myeloma Overview
The blood contains several different types of cells, each with an important job in the body. All blood cells develop in the bone marrow, the spongy substance within our bones.

Myeloma
Myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells. In myeloma, the cells overgrow, forming a mass or tumor that is located in the bone marrow.

Myeloma cells
Myeloma, like other cancers, begins in cells. In cancer, new cells form when the body doesn't need them, and old or damaged cells don't die when they should. These extra cells can form a mass of tissue called a growth or tumor.

How is myeloma diagnosed?
Symptoms of myeloma are often vague and the diagnosis is often delayed, sometimes by as long as a matter of months.

What is myeloma?
Myeloma is a type of cancer that affects cells called plasma cells. Plasma cells are found in bone marrow alongside maturing blood cells.

Myeloma often presents with bone pain, primarily in the spine and ribs, though other locations are also commonly affected. The pain typically worsens with movement. Other common symptoms include chronic or acute infection, anemia, and kidney failure.

Myeloma is diagnosed with blood tests (protein electrophoresis, peripheral blood smear), microscopic examination of the bone marrow (bone marrow biopsy), and X-rays of commonly involved bones.

Because myeloma cells may circulate in low numbers in your blood, they can populate other bone marrow sites in your body, even far from where they began. Uncontrolled plasma cell growth can damage bones and surrounding tissue.

While a myeloma diagnosis can be overwhelming, it is important to remember that there are several promising, new therapies that are helping patients live longer, healthier lives.

Multiple myeloma is cancer of the bone marrow caused by the uncontrolled growth of plasma cells, a form of white blood cells. Normally, plasma cells make antibodies called immunoglobulins to fight infections.

Multiple myeloma is rarely seen in people less than 40 years of age. About 300 Victorians are diagnosed with multiple myeloma each year. There is no cure, but the condition can usually be managed successfully for several years.

Multiple myeloma (say: my-a-low-ma) is a kind of cancer in the bone marrow. Bone marrow is the tissue inside the bones where new blood cells are made.

Multiple myeloma is a type of cancer formed by malignant plasma cells. Normal plasma cells are found in the bone marrow and are an important part of the immune system.

Multiple myeloma occurs when a specialized white cell, known as a plasma cell, becomes cancerous.
What is going on in the body?

Multiple myeloma mostly affects people aged over 60. The average age of people who are diagnosed is 70.
For reasons that are unclear, rates of multiple myeloma are twice as high in black people than in white people.

Your bones are important for many reasons, not the least of which is giving your skin something to stretch it out. Without your bones you would be unable to walk, stand, sit, move, work. you would really be a useless blob.

Multiple myeloma is an aggressive, cancerous (malignant) condition characterized by the overproduction of plasma cells in bone marrow, which cluster to form plasma cell tumors (marrow plasmacytomas).

Multiple myeloma will cause you to have a special kind of protein in your urine, called the "M-protein", "myeloma protein", or Bence-Jones protein. These are all terms for the same kind of protein.

Multiple myeloma is a relatively rare cancer of the bone marrow. It results from the abnormal growth of plasma cells in the bone marrow. Plasma cells normally produce antibodies.

Multiple myeloma
In multiple myeloma, abnormalplasma cells (myelomacells) build up in the bone marrow, forming tumors in many bones of the body. These tumors may prevent the bone marrow from making enough healthy blood cells.
