Myeloproliferative disorders

Myeloproliferative disorders are a group of rare illnesses that cause blood cells in the bone marrow, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, to grow and develop abnormally.

Myeloproliferative disorders are uncommon in pediatric patients and limited data are available in this population.

Myeloproliferative disorders all result in the overproduction of blood cells. Because of the detrimental effects of high numbers of blood cells of all types, treatment is directed towards lowering their numbers.

The myeloproliferative disorders include myelophthisic anemia, erythroblastic leukemia, leukemoid reaction, myelofibrosis, myeloid metaplasia, polycythemia vera, and thrombocytosis.

Polycythemia vera belongs to a group of diseases known as the myeloproliferative disorders (MPDs).

Mayo leads many international efforts for ET and similar disorders, including roles in the national Myeloproliferative Disorders Research Consortium.

General treatments for myeloproliferative disorders include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, steroids, and stem cell/bone marrow transplantation; each treatment is described below.
