Myofascial pain syndromes affect sensitive areas known as trigger points, located within the body's muscles. Myofascial pain syndromes are sometimes misdiagnosed and can be debilitating. Fibromyalgia is a type of myofascial pain syndrome.

Myofascial pain - the most common form of temporomandibular disorder; discomfort or pain in the muscles that control jaw function and the neck and shoulder muscles.

Introduction
Myofascial pain syndrome is a chronic form of muscle pain. The pain of myofascial pain syndrome centers around sensitive points in your muscles called trigger points.

myofascial pain - the most common form of TMD, which is discomfort or pain in the muscles that control jaw function and the neck and shoulder muscles.

Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a controversial diagnosis. According to the Fifth Edition of the American Medical Association (AMA) Guides, the medical community has not yet achieved consensus on how to interpret this syndrome (Cocchiarella 569).

Myofascial Pain Dysfunction Syndrome
A controversial, largely outmoded term that has been considered to mean a syndrome largely of muscular origin, a complex psychophysiological phenomenon, or syndrome primarily due to disturbed occlusal mechanics.

Myofascial Pain Syndrome. Myofascial pain syndrome can be confused with fibromyalgia and may also accompany it.

Cervical myofascial pain - Myofascial pain causes tight and tender areas of muscle that are sensitive to pressure.

Fibrositis or Myofascial Pain Syndrome
This is a musculoskeletal pain syndrome whose exact cause has not been identified, most commonly occurring in women 20 to 50 years old.

TMJ disorders are often divided into three categories: myofascial pain, internal derangement, and arthritis. Myofascial pain is the most common TMJ disorder. It occurs when the muscles that control the jaw are sore or tender.

Neck/Shoulder pain (eg, whiplash, cervical radiculopathy, fibromyalgia)
Headache (eg, migraine, cluster, tension type, cervicogenic) ...

The differential diagnosis includes rheumatoid arthritis, polymyositis, occult malignant disease, infectious disease, myofascial pain syndromes, and functional abnormalities.

Chronic fatigue syndrome, myofascial pain syndrome, depression, primary headaches, and certain stress-related disorders commonly occur with fibromyalgia, and have overlapping symptoms.

The terms fibromyalgia and myofascial pain often are used interchangeably, but they are not identical twins.
