Atrial myxoma- familial
Overview
An atrial myxoma is a non-cancerous tumor in the upper left or right side of the heart. It grows on the wall (atrial septum) that separates the two sides of the heart.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei
This information is about a type of cancer called pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), which is a rare, usually slow-growing, cancer of the appendix.

Myxomas are more common in women. About 10% of myxomas are passed down through families (inherited). Such tumors are called familial myxomas.

Myxoma Tumors of the Heart
Topic Overview
In rare cases, a tumor (myxoma) growing on the valve surface or in the left atrium of the heart can cause a blockage of the mitral valve that is similar to mitral valve stenosis Opens New Window.

Myxomatous degeneration: Age-related degeneration - It happens most often in elderly patients and commonly affects the mitral valve.

Myxoma is most common, accounting for 50% of all primary cardiac tumors. Incidence in women is 2 to 4 times that in men. In uncommon familial forms (Carney complex), men are affected more often.

Myxomatous degeneration can increase risk with or without the presence of mitral valve prolapse. A prior heart attack (myocardial infarction or MI) with related dysfunction of the papillary muscles can be a risk as well.

Risk Factors

Definition A myxoma is a rare, usually noncancerous, primary tumor (a new growth of tissue) of the heart. It is the most common of all benign heart tumors. Description Myxoma is an intracardiac tumor; it is found inside the heart.

Individuals with Carney complex are at increased risk of developing noncancerous (benign) tumors called myxomas in the heart (cardiac myxoma) and other parts of the body.

In patients with mitral valve prolapse, the mitral apparatus (valve leaflets and chordae) becomes affected by a process called myxomatous degeneration.

A Myxoma is composed of loose, gelatinous connective tissue similar to that found in the umbilical cord. Some nasal polypi seem to be of this nature, but true myxomatous tumours are rare.

Myxomas are rare, benign tumors which may be part of an inherited syndrome called Carney complex (see Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Syndromes (MEN) and Carney Complex section below for more information).
