Nail-patella syndrome is inherited as dominant gene. This means that the disease can be transmitted by an affected parent.

Family history is useful for identifying inheritance patterns and risk of polycystic kidney disease or other hereditary nephropathies (eg, hereditary nephritis, thin basement membrane disease, nail-patella syndrome, cystinuria, hyperoxaluria).
