The cause of neonatal conjunctivitis is difficult to determine because the signs and symptoms are similar for many of the causes.

Chlamydia may also result in adverse outcomes of pregnancy, including neonatal conjunctivitis and pneumonia. In addition, recent research has shown that women infected with chlamydia have a 3- to 5-fold increased risk of acquiring HIV, if exposed.

Neonatal conjunctivitis causes swelling, discharge and erythema and if not treated may lead to pneumonia. Chlamydia conjunctivitis occurs in approximately 25% of infants who have an infected mother.
