The herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a serious infection that affects all the major organs, often damaging them permanently. It can also cause death.
The herpes simplex virus infects 1 in every 2,500 - 5,000 neonates.

Neonatal herpes
Newborn babies with herpes virus infections are treated with intravenous acyclovir or vidarabine for 10 days. These drugs have greatly reduced deaths and increased the number of babies who appear normal at one year of age.

Herpes simplex infection (primary) of the newborn can be a fatal disease.
Usually contracted from the infected maternal genital tract, the eruption usually involves the skin, but rapidly can become systemic.

Two hundred and two infants with neonatal herpes simplex infections were randomized to receive either acyclovir 10 mg/kg every 8 hours (n=107) or vidarabine 30 mg/kg per day (n=95) for 10 days.

Fortunately, neonatal herpes is rare. Although about 25 - 30% of pregnant women have genital herpes, less than 0.1% of babies are born with neonatal herpes.

With early detection and treatment, most of the serious complications of neonatal herpes can be lessened. The drug acyclovir appears to be safe in pregnancy, including the first trimester, even when the drug is used for a prolonged period of time.
