Babies need sugar (glucose) for energy. Most of that glucose is used by the brain.

This is called neonatal hypoglycemia and is caused by having more than the usual number of islet cells in the pancreas (pancreatic islet cell hyperplasia). The islet cells of the pancreas produce insulin.
