A kidney stone is a solid mass made up of tiny crystals. One or more stones can be in the kidney or ureter at the same time.

This condition also is called nephrolithiasis or urolithiasis. Kidney stones are often as small as grains of sand and pass out of the body in urine without causing discomfort. The deposits can be pea sized, marble sized or even larger.
