Ultrasound is a noninvasive, risk-free imaging test that can be used to screen for hydronephrosis (obstructions of the flow of urine), kidney stones that predispose to infection, and kidney abscesses.

The renal ultrasound may detect hydronephrosis, duplication anomalies, stones, or abnormalities of the bladder wall and should be obtained at the earliest convenient time.

T3b/FIGO IIIB: The tumor has grown into the pelvic wall and/or causes hydronephrosis or nonfunctioning kidneys.
T4/FIGO IVA: The tumor has spread to the mucosa (lining) of the bladder or rectum and grown beyond the true pelvis.

When the blockage causes urine to back up into both kidneys, hydronephrosis (swelling of the kidneys) results. High blood pressure and kidney failure can result.
