Neurocutaneous Syndromes Treatment at Jefferson
Jefferson neurologists are experienced in treating all types of neurocutaneous syndromes, including tuberous sclerosis (TS), neurofibromatosis (NF) and Sturge-Weber disease.
How are neurocutaneous syndromes diagnosed?
Tuberous sclerosis, NF, and Sturge-Weber disease are congenital (present at birth). The diagnosis is made with a physical examination and diagnostic tests.
Diagnosis is clinical (see Table 1: Neurocutaneous Syndromes: Diagnosing Neurofibromatosis). CT or MRI is done in patients with neurologic signs or symptoms on presentation and in those with other examination findings that suggest neurofibromatosis.

NF is a neurocutaneous syndrome that is inherited from the parents. Passed down through the genes, the NF affects the nerves, spinal cord, brain, skin and possibly other systems throughout the body. NF consists of tumors that are called neurofibromas.
