Neurosyphilis is caused by Treponema pallidum, the bacteria that cause syphillis. It occurs about 10 - 20 years after a person is first infected with syphilis. Not everyone who has syphilis will develop this complication.

Neurosyphilis can occur at any stage of syphilis infection, although, commonly it is thought of as a tertiary complication, occurring late on in untreated disease.

NEUROSYPHILIS. About 8% of patients with untreated syphilis will develop symptoms in the central nervous system that include both physical and psychiatric symptoms.

Neurosyphilis
Syphilis is a chronic infectious disease caused by the bacterium (microorganism) treponema pallidum. It is transmitted by direct contact with an infected lesion, usually through sexual intercourse.

Neurosyphilis, infection of the nervous system, frequently occurs in the early stages in untreated patients. There may be no symptoms, mild headache, or severe consequences such as seizures and stroke.

People with neurosyphilis may need to be retested for up to 2 years after treatment. In all stages of syphilis, proper treatment will cure the disease. But in late syphilis, damage already done to body organs cannot be reversed.

Neurosyphilis may occur if the infection affects the central nervous system.
Late stage syphilis may take many years to develop. Damage may occur to the internal organs, including the eyes, heart, blood vessels, liver, bones, and joints.

Syphilitic aseptic meningitis is a form of meningovascular neurosyphilis, which is a progressive, life-threatening complication of syphilis infection.

About 3 to 7 % of persons with untreated syphilis develop neurosyphilis, when the bacteria invade the nervous system during the early stages of infection.

Primary, secondary, and latent-2,400,000 units (1 dose). Late (tertiary and neurosyphilis)-2,400,000 units at 7-day intervals for three doses.

Some of them go on to have symptoms of late syphilis, which can appear even years later and can damage the eyes, large blood vessels, heart, bones, and central nervous system (called neurosyphilis).

Is it possible I could have been exposed to syphilis and never suffered any symptoms (am female), and then later in life would develop neurosyphilis?

It can, however, go for years without any symptoms. Over time, this leads to a neurological disorder called neurosyphilis when it is left untrated. This results in damage to the spinal cord. This damage is called tabes dorsalis.

It's possible that symptoms may be mimicked by other medical conditions, such as steroid use, Cushing's syndrome, HIV-related illness, temporal lobe epilepsy, neurosyphilis, thyroid or parathyroid problems, alcohol or other drug abuse or dependence, ...
