What are night terrors?
A night terror is a partial waking from sleep with behaviors like screaming, kicking, panic, sleep walking, thrashing or mumbling. Terrors usually occur within 2 hours of bedtime.

Night terrors are a type of dreaming quite different from the typical nightmare. They most commonly occur in children between the ages of three to eight, though this is not always the case.

Night terrors are a fairly common childhood sleep disorder that is characterized by extreme terror while sleeping and the inability to fully wake up.

While night terrors are not harmful, they can resemble other conditions or lead to problems for the child. Consult your child's physician if you notice any of the following:

What are night terrors?
Some children have a different kind of scary dream called a "night terror." Night terrors happen during deep sleep (usually between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m.). A child having a night terror will often wake up screaming.

Night terrors are relatively rare, affecting only a small percentage of kids — often between ages 4 and 12. However frightening, night terrors aren't usually cause for concern. Most kids outgrow night terrors by adolescence.

Night terrors (sleep terrors) occur during deep sleep, usually during the first third of the night. The cause is unknown but night terrors may be triggered by fever, lack of sleep, or periods of emotional tension, stress, or conflict.

Night terrors primarily affect young children, usually between the ages of four and 12. Night terrors during childhood are not usually a cause for concern, and most children outgrow night terrors by adolescence.

With night terrors, your child may scream hysterically or get up and wander. But they are not awake and are hard to communicate with. They will go back to sleep in a few minutes and have no memory of it in the morning.

Others may have night terrors. Night terrors are different from nightmares because the child remains asleep throughout the entire episode and does not have any memory of it in the morning.

Parasomnias include sleepwalking, sleeptalking, nightmares, night terrors, and REM sleep-behavior disorder. There are no methodologically rigorous, blinded, and controlled studies of parasomnias in children.

In some cases there appears to be a spectrum of activity which ranges from confusional arousals to night terrors to actual sleep walking all or few of which behaviors we might capture during a sleep study.

Nigthmares are different from night terrors.

In addition to many of the same causes of insomnia as those of adults, younger people may have trouble sleeping because of conditions such sleepwalking, night terrors or bruxism - teeth grinding.
