Non-small cell lung cancer stages range from I to IV:
Stage I — The tumor has not spread outside the chest or to the lymph nodes (figure 1).

Non-small cell lung cancer is more likely than small cell cancer to be localized at the time of diagnosis. It also is more likely than small cell cancer to be treatable with surgery, but it often responds poorly to chemotherapy.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common type of lung cancer.
