This type used to be known as noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, NIDDM, or adult-onset diabetes. This is by far the most common type of diabetes. Someone with type 2 diabetes might make healthy or even high levels of insulin.

Type 2 diabetes, previously called adult-onset diabetes or noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), accounts for 90% of diabetes cases.

DM has two forms, referred to as type 1 diabetes (formerly called juvenile diabetes, or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, or IDDM) and type 2 diabetes (formerly called adult-onset diabetes, or noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, or NIDDM).
