Disorders A - Z ...

Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a condition in which the cerebral ventricles are enlarged. The cerebral ventricles are cavities within the brain that contain the cerebrospinal fluid.
What is going on in the body?

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is another rare disorder in which fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord is unable to drain normally.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus
Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a poorly understood condition that usually only affects people over 50 years old.
It can sometimes develop after an injury or a stroke, but in most cases the cause is unknown.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus: A form of hydrocephalus that often causes problems with walking, along with dementia and urinary incontinence. Pressures inside the brain remain normal, despite the increased fluid.

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH)
NPH is common among people over 55 years of age. The primary cause of NPH is trauma to the head, such as infection and bleeding within the brain.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) can also occur due to a gradual blockage of the CSF drainage pathways in the brain. Although the ventricles enlarge, the pressure of the CSF remains within normal range.

The symptoms of normal pressure hydrocephalus usually get worse over time if the condition is not treated, although some people may experience temporary improvements.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus occurs most often among the elderly. It may result from a subarachnoid hemorrhage, head trauma, infection, tumor, or complications of surgery, ...

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus
The ventricles are chambers in the brain that normally contain cerebrospinal fluid. Sometimes, too much fluid can build up in the ventricles.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus can happen to people at any age, but it is most common among the elderly. It may result from a subarachnoid hemorrhage, head trauma, infection, tumor, or complications of surgery.

Defective absorption of cerebrospinal fluid causes normal pressure hydrocephalus, seen most often in older people. In normal pressure hydrocephalus, excess fluid enlarges the ventricles but does not increase pressure on the brain.

A few are reversible, for example normal pressure hydrocephalus, chronic sub-dural haematomas, benign tumours, chronic hypocalcaemia, hypothyroidism, Addison's disease, hypopituitarism, Cushing's disease, vitamin B12 and B1 deficiency, ...

Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a rare syndrome where elderly patients have enlarged ventricles, normal CSF pressure and no cortical atrophy.

The condition is called "Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus" (NPH) and is caused by having too much CSF, i.e. too much "fluid on the brain". One study suggested that 1 in 20 diagnoses of dementia or Parkinson's disease were actually NPH.
