Definition Norplant is a long-acting hormone that is inserted under the skin and prevents conceptionfor up to five years.

Although the Norplant system is no longer available, a new single-rod system (Implanon) using a form of the progestin desogestrel and providing 2-3 years of contraception is currently available in Europe and may soon be available in the United States.

The first implant was the Norplant system, which used six rods that contained levonorgestrel. Due in part to serious complications, Norplant was withdrawn from the U.S. market in 2002.

Tweaking the dosage yielded low dosage phased pills in the 1980s, and by 1990, the first implantable form of hormonal birth control, Norplant®, was on the market. Norplant® was followed in 1992 by Depo-Provera®, the birth control shot.

If you have not been using a hormonal form of birth control (such as the pill, Norplant, Depo-Provera, or a Mirena IUD), you start using the ring by inserting it into the vagina between days 1 and 5 of your menstrual period.

Hormonal implants include Norplant® which has 6 small rods, Norplant II® which has 2 small rods, and Implanon® which has one small rod. Hormonal implants are a type of contraception that lasts for 3 to 5 years, depending on the type.

Birth control pills, the birth control patch, Norplant, Depo-Provera, intrauterine devices (IUDs), diaphragms, and any birth control methods other than condoms do not provide protection against HIV.

Norplant (six rubber capsules placed under anesthesia in the upper arm) will effectively block ovulation for five years.
