An obstruction can be congenital or acquired. One of the most common types of obstructive hydrocephalus is a narrowing of a channel in the brain that connects two ventricles together (aqueductal stenosis).

Additionally, the close proximity of the tumor to the optic nerves and chiasm may result in vision problems. Some patients present with obstructive hydrocephalus due to tumor obstruction of the third ventricle.
