Oncocytoma Overview
An oncocytoma is a benign tumor made up of oncocytes (unusually large cells that tend to form into tumors). Oncocytomas can occur in any organ, but they are particularly common in the kidneys and salivary glands.

Solid tumours, including adenomas, oncocytomas and adenocarcinomas (see oncocytoma renal and renal cell carcinoma), occur with increased frequency in dialysis patients, developing in up to 7% of cases.
Other benign tumors include monomorphic adenoma, oncocytoma, and papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum (previously known as cylindroma). These tumors rarely recur and rarely become malignant.
Lymphomas; Carcinoids; Oncocytomas; In children, nephroblastoma (Wilms' tumour) makes up 5-6% of primary renal kidney tumours; and Renal medullary carcinoma is a rare complication of sickle cell disease.
For example, oncocytoma (a benign tumor) may coexist with kidney cancer in up to 10 percent of cases. Thus, a biopsy may sample the benign component, but miss the malignant component.
