Oral Herpes Overview
Oral herpes is an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus. The virus causes painful sores on your lips, gums, tongue, roof of your mouth, and inside your cheeks. It also can cause symptoms such as fever and muscle aches.

Herpes simplex is a viral disease caused by herpes simplex viruses; both herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) cause herpes simplex.
COLD SORES (Oral Herpes)
Cold sores (oral herpes) are caused by infection with the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of Herpes Simplex Virus: HSV Type 1 and HSV Type 2.
Usually, your GP will be able to recognise cold sores (or oral herpes infection) from looking inside and around your mouth. Your doctor may take a swab from the blister and send it to a laboratory to confirm that you have the herpes virus.

Everyone is at risk for oral herpes from HSV-1. In fact, studies suggest that by adolescence, 62% of Americans are infected with HSV-1, and by the time people are in their 60s, up to 85% have been infected.

Oral herpes usually appears on the lips or inside the mouth as "cold sores" (small blisters). Oral herpes can be spread through contact such as kissing, or though oral sex. Direct contact for a short amount of time is enough to spread the virus.
"Oral herpes" causes sores and blisters on the lips and gums and in the mouth-typically referred to as cold sores. Oral herpes is very common and can be spread by kissing or oral sex. It is usually caused by HSV-1.
Primary oral herpes simplex may mimic RAS but usually occurs in younger children, always involves the gingiva and may affect any keratinized mucosa (hard palate, attached gingiva, dorsum of tongue), and is associated with systemic symptoms.
