Osmotic fragility
Definition
Osmotic fragility is a test to detect whether red blood cells are more likely to break down.
Why is the Test Performed?

Osmotic fragility test. This test looks for red blood cells that are more fragile than normal. These cells may be a sign of hereditary spherocytosis (an inherited type of hemolytic anemia).

Decreased osmotic fragility
Deficiency of an enzyme called lecithin cholesterol acyl transferase
Hemoglobin abnormalities (hemoglobinopathies)
Iron deficiency
Liver disease
Spleen removal
Thalassemia ...

If these disorders are suspected, the RBC osmotic fragility test (which mixes RBCs with varying concentrations of saline), the RBC autohemolysis test (which measures the amount of spontaneous hemolysis occurring after 48 h of sterile incubation), and, ...

Congenital Nonspherocytic Hemolytic Anemia includes any of a group of inherited anemias characterized by shortened red cell survival, lack of spherocytosis, and normal osmotic fragility associated with erythrocyte membrane defects, ...

The most important test is the osmotic fragility test. This test detects the increased tendency of the red blood cells toward hemolysis. Bone marrow examination is not necessary to make this diagnosis.

not only of many spherocytes but also increased numbers of reticulocytes (young red blood cells), hyperbilirubinemia (increased blood levels of the jaundice pigment bilirubin due to the breakup of the red cells) and increased osmotic fragility of the ...
