Osteomyelitis means an infection of bone, which can either be acute (of recent onset) or chronic (longstanding). Bacteria are the usual infectious agents.

Osteomyelitis is characterized by pain, high fever, and formation of an abscess at the site of infection. Infection may be caused by a variety of microorganisms, including staphylococci, streptococci, and other pathogenic bacteria.
Osteomyelitis is an inflammation of the bone marrow (a tissue that fills the openings inside of bones) and bone that is next to the bone marrow.
