Paraneoplastic syndromes are a group of rare nervous system (neurological) disorders that may develop in some people who have cancer. They are caused by your immune system's response to cancer cells in your body.

Paraneoplastic syndromes are symptoms that occur at sites distant from a tumor or its metastasis.

Paraneoplastic syndrome (pair-a-nee-o-PLAS-tik): A group of symptoms that may develop when substances released by some cancer cells disrupt the normal function of surrounding cells and tissue.

Symptoms from paraneoplastic syndromes, disorders caused by a hormonal or an immune response of the body to the presence of the cancer. Examples include certain hormone imbalances, neurologic complications and kidney problems.

Other symptoms can be caused by substances made by lung cancer cells - referred to as a paraneoplastic syndrome.

In the context of a malignant disease, Acanthosis nigricans is a paraneoplastic syndrome and is then commonly referred to as Acanthosis nigricans maligna. Involvement of mucous membranes is rare and suggests a coexisting malignant condition.
