Surgery (parathyroidectomy). There are consensus guidelines that have been drawn up to determine when someone with hyperparathyroidism should have surgery to remove the abnormal parathyroid gland or glands (parathyroidectomy).

Risk-reducing thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy with reimplantation of one or more parathyroid glands into the neck or nondominant forearm is a preventive option for all subtypes of MEN 2.

Parathyroidectomy is an operation to remove the parathyroid glands. Partial parathyroidectomy means at least one gland is left intact to help the body regulate calcium. The complete set of glands is removed during a total parathyroidectomy.

This surgery is called a parathyroidectomy. Because it is difficult to determine before surgery if a parathyroid tumor is benign or malignant, the surgeon needs to remove the entire gland and any tissue that looks abnormal.

But a newer technique, known as minimally invasive radioguided parathyroidectomy, may offer an easier option for some people.
