Why is PDA a concern?
When the ductus arteriosus stays open, oxygen-rich (red) blood passes from the aorta to the pulmonary artery, mixing with the oxygen-poor (blue) blood already flowing to the lungs.

PDA affects girls more often than boys. The condition is more common in premature infants and those with neonatal respiratory distress syndrome.

If a PDA does not respond to medication, or is due to causes other than prematurity, surgery may be needed. This surgery is called ligation and involves placing a suture around the ductus to close it.

One theory about the cause of PDA has to do with the action of a chemical made by the body. In the normal heart, levels of this chemical drop, and the duct closes soon after birth. But in PDA, the chemical remains active, and the duct stays open.

Aortic dissection is the surging of blood through a tear in the aortic intima with separation of the intima and media and creation of a false lumen.

PDA is a particularly common problem in premature infants with the respiratory distress syndrome. The left-to-right shunt through the ductus increases their risk of serious complications including brain hemorrhage.

PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus) : This is a non-cyanotic defect. Symptoms and Heart Murmur are usually not noted in the newborn nursery because the infant's blood circulation pattern is not yet fully established.

Before birth, the ductus arteriosus allows blood to bypass the baby's lungs by connecting the pulmonary arteries (which supply blood to the lungs) with the aorta (which supplies blood to the body).

Infants who have genetic conditions such as Down syndrome

A PDA causes a heart murmur because of the blood flow from the aorta to the pulmonary artery. This characteristic sound can be heard during a physical exam.

Once the PDA begins to close (a natural occurrence), the baby will become extremely sick (go into “shock') due to lack of blood supply to the body. At this point, treatment is necessary for the baby to survive.
