Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is a rare disease that causes severe blistering of the skin and the mucous membranes lining the mouth, nose, throat and genitals. The mouth is almost always affected, which can make eating and brushing of teeth very painful.

Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune disease of the skin and mucous membrane. As many as 80% of cases first exhibit symptoms in the mouth (mucous membrane).

If not treated, pemphigus vulgaris is usually fatal within 2 months to 5 years, generally because of complications; generalized infection is the most frequent cause of death. Pemphigus vulgaris can be a chronic, progressive, and often fatal disease.
