Pericardiocentesis involves the use of a needle to withdraw fluid from the pericardial sac (membrane that surrounds the heart).
Alternative Names
Pericardial tap; Percutaneous pericardiocentesis ...

Pericardiocentesis. In this procedure, a doctor uses a sterile needle or a small tube (catheter) to remove and drain the excess fluid from the pericardial cavity.

Pericardiocentesis-A procedure used to drain fluid out of the sac surrounding the heart. This is done by inserting a needle through the chest and into the sac.

Pericardiocentesis (needle aspiration of the pericardial cavity) or surgical creation of an opening (pericardiectomy or pericardial window) dramatically improves systemic arterial pressure and cardiac output with aspiration of as little as 25 ml of ...

Surgical drainage of the excess fluid (pericardiocentesis).
Drugs to reduce inflammation, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (NSAIDS) or corticosteroids.
Medication to treat any arrhythmias.
Surgery to remove the pericardium.

In such settings, immediate pericardiocentesis or thoracotomy is done (see Fig. 2: Pericarditis: Pericardiocentesis.).

Duration will be increased if drainage is required to remove excess fluid around the pericardium (pericardiocentesis), or if the pericardium needs to be surgically removed (pericardiectomy).

Therefore, in most patients, pericardiocentesis (described above in Diagnosis section) is not necessary. In rare cases, scarring of the pericardial sac around the heart causes constrictive pericarditis.

Cardiac tamponade is treated with a procedure called pericardiocentesis (per-ih-KAR-de-o-sen-TE-sis). A needle or tube (called a catheter) is inserted into the chest wall to remove excess fluid in the pericardium.

This is called pericardiocentesis or a pericardial tap. Your doctor will insert a thin tube through your chest to drain the fluid away. If the fluid keeps coming back you may need to have an operation to help drain it.

Fluids are given to maintain normal blood pressure until pericardiocentesis can be performed. Medications that increase blood pressure may also help sustain the patient's life until the fluid is drained.

The fluid around the heart must be drained. Pericardiocentesis is a procedure that uses a needle to remove fluid from the pericardial sac, the tissue that surrounds the heart.

If the fluid is seriously affecting the heart’s pumping, the fluid may need to be removed through pericardiocentesis (the same procedure used for testing). In rare cases, surgery may be performed.
