Definition
Painless swelling of the feet and ankles is a common problem, particularly among older people.

Peripheral Edema:
Mild to moderate peripheral edema occurs in a dose-dependent manner with ADALAT CC. The placebo subtracted rate is approximately 8% at 30 mg, 12% at 60 mg and 19% at 90 mg daily.

Peripheral edema: Peripheral edema is an unusual fluid accumulation, resulting in swelling of the arms or legs.

Ascites and peripheral edema can be uncomfortable, and can be a sign of a more serious condition. Pulmonary edema, which can be life-threatening, is a symptom of heart failure and is discussed in more detail separately.

In order to control peripheral edema, individuals with a low serum protein may need to be assigned more sedentary duties that would not require them to be on their feet for extended periods.

Edema most commonly occurs in the feet and legs, where it is referred to as peripheral edema. The swelling is the result of the accumulation of excess fluid under the skin in the spaces within the tissues.
