Agoraphobia is a type of anxiety disorder. A person with agoraphobia is afraid to leave environments they know or consider to be safe. In severe cases, a person with agoraphobia considers their home to be the only safe environment.

Phobias can range from mild fear to terror that can affect a person's everyday life. Phobias are medically defined as irrational fears of a situation that is harmless. The sufferer's reaction to a phobia is uncontrollable.

Phobias are largely underreported, probably because many phobia sufferers find ways to avoid the situations to which they are phobic.

Agoraphobia and panic disorder
Many people with agoraphobia also have a related panic disorder, and a history of panic attacks. Their agoraphobia often develops as a result of a previous panic attack.

Agoraphobia refers to a fear of being in places where escape might be difficult, or where help might be unavailable in case of a panic attack.
