Overview: Pinkeye (conjunctivitis) describes the inflammation or bacterial or viral infection of the membrane that lines the eyelid (called the conjunctiva) and part of the eyeball.

pinkeye A condition in which the conjunctiva (membranes lining the eyelids and covering the white part of the eye) become inflamed or infected. Also called conjunctivitis.

Commonly known as "pinkeye" because of the inflamed tissues that are seen when the eyelid is pulled back, conjunctivitis is the most coimon infectious disease of the eye that affects children.

You can also help relieve the symptoms of viral pinkeye by using warm compresses on the eye several times a day. If the condition doesn't clear within a day or two, you should still see a doctor, since viral forms can become bacterial conjunctivitis.

Sounds like conjunctivitis, sometimes called pinkeye. This can happen when the conjunctiva, the covering of your eye and inside your eyelids, gets infected. Your eye may feel itchy and like you have a grain of sand caught in it.

Acute bacterial conjunctivitis - or pinkeye - usually lasts about 2 weeks. Some viral conjunctival infections may last 2 to 3 weeks, whereas others follow a chronic course and may produce severe disability.
