Pinworms Overview
Pinworms are extremely common. It is estimated that there are more than 40 million cases in the United States each year. Although anyone can catch pinworms, they are most common in children aged 5-14 years.

 


Pinworm infection: An infection caused by a small, white intestinal worm: the pinworm or, more formally, Enterobius vermicularis. The pinworm is about the length of a staple and lives for the most part within the rectum of humans.

What is pinworm infection?
Pinworm infection is caused by the helminth (Enterobius vermicularis), a small, white parasitic worm.

Pinworms are tiny (one-half-inch), white, threadlike roundworms found primarily in the colon and rectum. They enter the body when pinworm eggs are swallowed. The eggs subsequently hatch in the small intestine.

What are pinworms?
Pinworms are little white worms about one quarter to one half inch in length. They live in the intestines.

Pinworm infestation occurs all over the world. Humans are the only known hosts. A person gets pinworms by swallowing the eggs of the worm. Pinworm eggs remain alive for up to three weeks.

Pinworms are described as tiny, white, thread-like worms that can live in the bowels. Children under the age of ten years old are extremely susceptible to these types of worms but they can affect adults. They are not harmful and easily treatable.

Threadworms (pinworms, Enterobius vermicularis) are worm parasites that infect and live in the bowel (intestines). Threadworms are the most common parasite infection of children in the UK. Threadworms cause itching around the anus.

Enterobiasis or pinworm infection is a common, contagious, parasitic infestation found mainly in children.

Pinworms: Very tiny white worms, which cause rectal itching at night. Contracted by eating raw or poorly cooked vegetables which have contacted contaminated water. Scratching the anal area can also transmit them on the fingers.

Pinworms are most active at night, 2 to 3 hours after bedtime. The female worm comes out through the anus, and deposits eggs in the perineal area. The perineal area is between the thighs and runs from the anus to the genitals.

Pinworms, roundworms and tapeworms are examples of helminths. After helminth eggs enter the body, they hatch and live there, usually in the intestines. The diseases they cause are often mild, but sometimes serious.

Threadworms, sometimes known as pinworms, are white and look like a small piece of thread. The adult female worm can be 8-13mm long, and the male worm 2-5mm long. Adult worms live for up to six weeks.
