With PKD, fluid-filled cysts sprout in the kidney-blocking kidney function. The cysts can spread to other organs, like the heart and brain. More than half of the patients experience kidney failure and even end-stage renal disease.

Diagnosis of PKD may involve a number of tests including:
Physical examination - can detect symptoms such as high blood pressure or enlarged kidneys.
Blood tests - to assess kidney function.

ACKD differs from PKD in several ways. People with PKD often have a family history of PKD. They are born with the disease-causing gene. No disease-causing gene is associated with ACKD.

The adult form of PKD only requires one abnormal gene, which can come from either parent. This type of inheritance is called autosomal dominant. In this situation, the parent with the abnormal gene has PKD.
