Plasmacytoma

Disease Plasma Cell DyscrasiasPlasmacytosis

Plasmacytoma is a type of cancer that forms in the plasma cells of blood. The abnormal plasma cells proliferate and collect in a single location - typically bone marrow or soft tissue - and form a plasmacytoma.

Plasmacytoma refers to a malignant plasma cell tumor[1] growing within soft tissue or within the skeleton. The skeletal forms usually have other occult tumors and frequently disseminate to multiple myeloma over the course of 5-10 years.

Term Definition
Plasmacytoma
A type of cancer that begins in plasma cells (white blood cells that produce antibodies). A plasmacytoma may turn into multiple myeloma.

Treatment of Solitary Extramedullary Plasmacytoma
Local radiotherapy alone is usually used to treat this condition; daily treatment is given over 4-6 weeks. Occasionally surgery may be combined with radiotherapy.

Definition
Multiple myeloma is cancer of the plasma cells in bone marrow.

Plasmacytoma
In this type of plasma cell neoplasm, the abnormal plasma cells (myeloma cells) collect in one location and form a single tumor, called a plasmacytoma.

Plasmacytoma
A tumour of plasma cells in either bone or soft tissue. It is very similar to multiple myeloma but only found in one place in the body.

Plasmacytoma: A localized tumor of malignant plasma cells, either in a bone or in the other tissues of the body. If there is only one such area of bone involved it is called solitary plasmacytoma.

Plasmacytoma: A tumor that is made up of cancerous plasma cells.
Plasmapheresis (plas-ma-fer-EE-sis): The process of removing certain proteins from the blood.

The tumor cells can form a single collection (a plasmacytoma) or many tumors (multiple myeloma). Plasma cells are part of the immune system and make antibodies.

Plasmacytoma. This is a localised collection of malignant plasma cells typically affecting one of the flat bones in the body - eg the skull, shoulder blade, pelvis etc. In approximately 50 per cent of cases, it's localised with only a single lesion.

Multiple myeloma is an aggressive, cancerous (malignant) condition characterized by the overproduction of plasma cells in bone marrow, which cluster to form plasma cell tumors (marrow plasmacytomas).

Isolated (solitary) plasmacytoma of bone. In this condition only one plasma cell tumour is found in a bone. There is no other evidence of myeloma anywhere else in the body.

Solitary plasmacytoma is a mass of myeloma cells that involve only one site in the bone or other organs (most commonly the upper respiratory tract, including the nose and throat).

These myeloma cells may form tumors called plasmacytomas. Eventually, multiple soft spots or holes, called osteolytic lesions, form in the bones.

In some cases, the myeloma cells collect in one bone and form a single tumor, called a plasmacytoma. However, in other cases, the myeloma cells collect in many bones, forming many bone tumors. This is called multiple myeloma.

the myeloma cells spread into the cavities of all the large bones of the body, forming multiple small lesions. Hence the name "multiple" myeloma. In some cases, however, the myeloma cells collect in a single bone and form a tumor called plasmacytoma.
