Pleural Biopsy
(Biopsy-Pleural, Percutaneous Pleural Biopsy)
Procedure Overview ...

Pleural fluid is found in the space around the lungs. First, a sample of the pleural fluid is drained. This is done using a procedure called thoracentesis.

Pleural fluid is the fluid that surrounds the lungs and lubricates their linings. This test can help identify any cancer cells if they are present in the pleural fluid.
Who is a candidate for the test?

Pleural effusions are a very common phenomena, since they can be caused by any of a number of lung and heart disorders. A small pleural effusion is often present on a chest x-ray when somebody has a significant heart or lung problem.

"PLEURAL REACTION" ALWAYS REQUIRES TESTS TO FIND EXACT CAUSE
Question: What does it mean when you are told you have pleural reaction?

A pleural effusion may cause you to cough or feel short of breath. You may breathe faster than usual. You may have chest pain that starts or gets worse when you breathe in. The pain may hurt the most when you take a deep breath or cough.

Pleural Smear
See all Pictures & Images Why is the Test Performed?
The test is performed when infection of the pleural space is suspected or when an abnormal collection of pleural fluid is noticed by chest X-ray.

Pleural fluid cytology
How the Test is Performed
The test is performed by inserting a needle into the pleural space to draw off a sample of pleural fluid (the procedure is called thoracentesis).

Pleura-The pleura is a slippery membrane that covers both the lungs and the chest wall.
Chest cavity-The lungs are located in the chest cavity.

Pleural Mesothelioma, or cancer of the lung lining, may cause shortness of breath, fluid build-up, chest pain, hoarseness, coughing up blood, muscle weakness, paralysis, sensory loss and swelling of the face and arms.

Pleural exudate has a specific gravity greater than 1.020. Certain conditions produce exudative pleural effusions such as infections, pulmonary infarctions, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, and certain malignancies.

Pleural Diseases
Respiration Disorders - Diseases of the respiratory system in general or unspecified or for a specific respiratory disease not available.

Pleural mesothelioma signs and symptoms may include:
Shortness of breath
Painful breathing
Chest pain under the rib cage
Unusual lumps of tissue under the skin on your chest
Unexplained weight loss
Dry (nonproductive) cough ...

Pleural effusion (fluid escaping into the membranes around the lungs) is a complication.
Calling your health care provider
Call for an appointment with your health care provider if you notice symptoms of mesothelioma.

pleura - membrane that covers the outside of the lung.
pneumonectomy - removal of an entire lung.
pulmonary artery - blood vessel delivering oxygen-poor blood from the right ventricle to the lungs.

pleura - membrane that covers the outside of the lung.
pleural effusion - a collection of fluid between the lung and chest wall.
pleurisy - inflamed membranes around the lungs.

The pleural space is the space between the inner and outer lining of the lung. It is normally very thin, and lined only with a very small amount of fluid.

PLEURISY"1
SYMPTOMS"The pleural membranes become swollen and inflamed, and at first rub together with each breath, causing severe pain and sound that can be heard by a physician using his stethoscope.

Thoracentesis (Pleural Tap): A procedure to remove fluid from the area between the two layers (pleura) covering the lung.
Thoracic: Having to do with the chest.

Medical Terms : Pleura

Stage IIIb with pleural effusion and Stage IV NSCLC. Patients with stage IV NSCLC or stage IIIb due to malignant pleural effusion (cancer cells in the fluid around the lung) are typically not treated with surgery or radiation therapy.

One layer of the pleura, which is just a few cells thick, overlies each lung. The other layer lines the inner chest wall.

Denver® Pleurx™ pleural catheter/home drainage kits Catheter and drainage kits are indicated for intermittent, long-term drainage and pleurodesis for palliation of symptomatic dyspnea due to recurrent malignant pleural effusion.

For example, a pleural effusion is the collection of fluid between two layers of the pleura (the lung's covering). Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) A test that takes recordings of the electrical activity of the heart.

In this variety the pleura is covered by a thick layer of granular, fibrinous material. Fibrinous pleurisy is usually secondary to acute diseases of the lung such as pneumonia, cancer, abscess or tuberculosis. (3) Sero-fibrinous pleurisy.

This inflammation of the pleura, the membrane that lines your chest cavity and covers your lungs, may result from a variety of conditions, including pneumonia and, rarely, autoimmune conditions such as lupus.

(nmthõr´ks), collapse of a lung with escape of air into the pleural cavity between the lung and the chest wall.

The Thoracic Group of the Surgery Branch conducts clinical trials for esophageal cancer, lung cancer, pleural mesothelioma, and lung metastasis. Patients and health care providers may call 301-451-1233 between 6:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Your doctor will check for signs of pleural effusion by gently tapping your chest wall.

If the pleura, or lining of the lung, is involved, it often produces fluid, called a pleural effusion. This leads to shortness of breath because the fluid prevents the lung from expanding during breathing.

A tumor derived from mesothelial tissue (peritoneum, pleura, pericardium). It appears as broad sheets of cells, with some regions containing spindle-shaped, sarcoma-like cells and other regions showing adenomatous patterns.

pneumomediastinum - air leaks into the mediastinum (the space in the thoracic cavity behind the sternum and between the two pleural sacs containing the lungs).

Asbestos can cause thickening of the pleura, the membrane that lines the outside of the lung. Often this will only be noted when an x-ray is performed for another reason.

Pneumothorax where the air is trapped inside the chest between the chest wall and the lung, the pleural space , causing the lung to collapse.
Pneumomediastinum where air is trapped in the middle part of the chest.

The lungs are enveloped in a membrane called the pleura.
The lungs are separated from each other by the mediastinum, an area that contains the following:
heart and its large vessels
trachea (windpipe)
esophagus
thymus
lymph nodes ...

This medicine is given by IV infusion (slow drip through a needle into a large vein) to treat pleural mesothelioma. It is also give to treat non-small cell lung cancer. It is usually given along with cisplatin, another anticancer medicine.

Pleuropneumonia. A specific infectious disease in cattle characterized by inflammation of the lung and pleura, generally called contagious pleuropneumonia. It is due to a virus.
Plena. The plural of plenum.

Shortness of breath usually results from a blockage in part of the lung, collection of fluid around the lung (pleural effusion), or the spread of tumor through the lungs.

however the term is restricted to a peculiar affection of the lungs, exhibited in two forms, vesicular emphysema, dilation or rupture of the air-sacs, and interlobular emphysema, infiltration of air into the connective tissue beneath the pleura.
