Pneumomediastinum is uncommon. It occurs when air leaks from any part of the lung or airways into the mediastinum. Most often, one of the small air sacs (alveoli) ruptures and leaks air.

Pneumomediastinum may present in the same way as pneumothorax (spontaneous or traumatic), but it is sometimes accompanied by throat pain or dysphagia.

Pneumothorax, Pneumomediastinum and Pulmonary Interstitial Emphysema
Normally the air that we breathe goes down the trachea (windpipe) , which branches off into 2 bronchi , and then branches further in each lung into numerous bronchioli .

Pneumothorax and pneumomediastinum are frequently associated in case of oesophageal perforation. CT: \r\n Computer (assisted) tomography. commonly known as a CT scan, is a computerised X-ray technique.

The result can be pneumothorax (causing dyspnea, chest pain, and unilateral decrease in breath sounds) or pneumomediastinum (causing sensation of fullness in the chest, neck pain, pleuritic chest pain that may radiate to the shoulders, dyspnea, ...
