Definition
Baker's cyst is an accumulation of joint fluid (synovial fluid) that forms behind the knee.

Popliteal cyst; Bulge-knee
Causes
A Baker's cyst is caused by swelling in the knee. The swelling is due to an increase in synovial fluid - the fluid that lubricates the knee joint. When pressure builds up, fluid bulges into the back of the knee.

Popliteal cyst
Causes, incidence, and risk factors
A Baker's cyst may form by the connection of a normal bursa (a normal lubricating fluid sac) with the knee joint. This type is more common in children.

Popliteal cysts are found in up to 20% of asymptomatic knees (Tschirch).
Incidence of lumbar synovial cysts is less than 0.5% of individuals with back pain in the general population (Khan).
