Pain - Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common complication of shingles. It causes mild to severe pain or unpleasant sensations and is often described as "burning".

Conversely, postherpetic neuralgia is fairly easy to diagnose as it generally follows an attack of shingles, an adult form of the chickenpox virus.

One of the main complications of shingles is persistent pain, called postherpetic neuralgia. This may occur because the nerve cells that carry pain signals are most affected by the shingles virus. The pain can be severe and unrelenting.

People with shingles should see a doctor as soon as the rash develops so they can receive treatment to ease the severity of the outbreak and minimize the risk of developing postherpetic neuralgia.

It is important to treat shingles quickly and aggressively; otherwise, it can develop into an even more unpleasant condition called postherpetic neuralgia.
