Postural hypotension. If you get dizzy or feel faint from a drop in blood pressure when you get up, your doctor may prescribe medication, a high-salt diet or support stockings.

POSTURAL HYPOTENSION The major symptom of postural hypotension, also called orthostasis, is low blood pressure. When a person stands up from a prone position, blood vessels in the legs and feet must constrict to force blood to the brain.

Although postural hypotension can occur in young, otherwise healthy adults, it occurs most often in older adults. In fact, as many as 20% of people older than 65 years of age have postural hypotension.
