Pre-eclampsia is a complication of pregnancy. Women with pre-eclampsia have high blood pressure, protein in their urine, and may develop other symptoms and problems.

What are pre-eclampsia and eclampsia?
Pre-eclampsia is a syndrome marked by a sudden increase in the blood pressure of a pregnant woman after the 20th week of pregnancy.

Pre-eclampsia usually occurs during the second half of pregnancy (from around week 20), or immediately after the delivery of a baby.

Each year in the UK, around ten women and 1,000 babies die as a result of pre-eclampsia. In its mildest form it affects one in ten pregnancies, while one in 50 pregnancies are affected severely.

What is pre-eclampsia?
Regular checks of blood pressure, protein levels in the urine and water retention are necessary into the last trimester of pregnancy to prevent pre-eclampsia.

Severe Pre-eclampsia
If the pre-eclampsia is severe, labor can be induced as early as 28 weeks. Early delivery poses a risk to the fetus, but allowing severe pre-eclampsia to continue is extremely risky for the mother and fetus.

Pre-eclampsia is characterised, not only by high BP, but also proteinuria (protein in the urine) caused by 'leaky' kidneys. However, pre-eclampsia doesn't just affect the BP and kidneys, it affects almost every organ system of the body.

Pre-eclampsia is a problem that occurs in some women during pregnancy. Blood pressure increases and protein appears in the urine. This usually occurs during the second half of pregnancy and in 5%-8% of pregnancies.

Duration depends on the month of pregnancy when the diagnosis was made and the severity of the diabetes, which may continue until delivery.
