Home pregnancy tests can detect pregnancy from a urine sample within a few days of a missed period. The test checks for the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in the urine.

A pregnancy test measures a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). HCG is a hormone produced during pregnancy. It appears in the blood and urine of pregnant women as early as 10 days after conception.

How do pregnancy tests work?
Pregnancy tests look for a special hormone in the urine or blood that is only there when a woman is pregnant. This hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), can also be called the pregnancy hormone.

Qualitative serum pregnancy testing is performed when greater accuracy is sought, but only a "yes" or "no" answer is required.
