Priapism is a persistent and usually painful erection that lasts for several hours.
Priapism is not necessarily related to sexual stimulation or desire, and it does not subside after ejaculation (when semen is released from the penis).

 


How is priapism treated?
The presence of a painful erection for longer than four hours justifies a medical assessment by a GP or a visit to the Accident and Emergency Department if this is quicker.

What is Priapism?
Priapism refers to the medical condition in which the patient experiences a persistent and painful erection that is present for longer than 6 hours, which is not induced by stimulation nor sexual desire.

Priapism may also be caused by other conditions. Some genital infections, leukemia, or sickle-cell disease can cause priapism to manifest. As well, priapism may be the result of injury to the spine, which is, in itself, deserving of medical attention.

Priapism is an abnormally prolonged, often painful erection. Usually, this erection is not caused by sexual desire or stimulation, and is not relieved by orgasm.

Priapism
Males who have sickle cell anemia may have painful, unwanted erections. This condition is called priapism (PRI-a-pizm). It happens because the sickle cells block blood flow out of an erect penis.

Apomorphine may cause prolonged painful erections in some patients. During clinical development, painful erections were reported by 3 of 361 males (< 1%), and one patient withdrew from apomorphine therapy because of priapism.

How is priapism treated?
Treatment for priapism is a medical emergency, because a prolonged erection can scar the penis and result in a long term complication of erectile dysfunction if if not treated.

Priapism can occur at any age, although it's most prevalent in boys between ages 5 and 10 years old, and men from ages 20 to 50 years. An uncommon condition, priapism is usually an emergency that needs immediate medical attention.

Genitals: Priapism (a constant erection of the penis) is common. It affects about 40% of all men with sickle cell disease. Severe episodes are a frequent cause of impotency.

Definition Priapism is a prolonged, sustained erection of the penis that occurs in the absence of sexual excitation and which may last hours to days, with or without pain .

Treatment for Priapism. Exchange transfusions may be used to reduce the hemoglobin S and sickling that cause this condition. Drugs used to prevent priapism include terbutaline and phenylephrine, which help restrict blood flow to the penis.
