Primary effusion lymphoma manifests in the pleural, pericardial, or peritoneal cavities in the body and lacks identifiable lymphoma masses. The pleural cavities are the spaces between the lungs and the lining that covers them, called the pleura.

Primary effusion lymphoma. This very aggressive form of lymphoma most often occurs in people with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV, the virus that causes autoimmune deficiency syndrome or AIDS), otherwise immunocompromised, or elderly.

DLBCL can occur in lymph nodes or in organs outside of the lymphatic system. DLBCL includes several subtypes such as mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma, intravascular large B-cell lymphoma, and primary effusion lymphoma.

Primary effusion lymphomas, also called body cavity-based lymphomas (BCBL). This type of NHL is relatively rare, but seems to be related to infection by human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) in addition to HIV.
