Screening options may change over time as new technologies are developed and more is learned about HBOC. It is important to talk with your doctor about appropriate screening tests.

Traditionally, prostate cancer screening consisted of digital-rectal examination. Since 1986, however, a blood test for a tumor marker called prostate-specific antigen (PSA) has greatly increased the number of early-stage prostate cancers diagnosed.

The American Cancer Society suggests men talk with their doctors about the benefits and risks of prostate cancer screening. While the PSA test and the DRE can find cancers early on, they usually can't determine how dangerous the cancer is.

The ACS recommends that most men older than 50 find out if prostate cancer screening is right for them.

Questions related to prostate cancer screening were first asked on the 2002 BRFSS questionnaire. BRFSS includes measures on prostate cancer screening, but State Cancer Profiles does not.

If you are age 50 or older, speak with your doctor about the pros and cons of prostate cancer screening. Some experts believe that screening is the best way to prevent death and disability form prostate cancer.

Men are also advised to discuss prostate cancer screening with their doctors. Women may be advised to also have a regular breast exam and mammogram as well as a pelvic exam and Pap test to screen for breast cancer and cervical cancer.
